Elizabeth Wittenberg, JD, LICSW
Ms. Wittenberg was elected to the Hamm Clinic Board of Directors in June 2011. She received her BA in Political Science from Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA in 1983 graduating Magna cum laude and with Departmental Honors. Ms. Wittenberg received her J.D. at the University of Chicago Law School, Chicago, IL in 1987 and after several years as an attorney went to the College of St. Catherine and University of St. Thomas, School of Social Work in St. Paul, MN and was awarded her MSW in 2007. From 1987-1991 Ms. Wittenberg was an assistant attorney at Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, MN, and represented a range of business clients on general corporate, securities law, financing and transactional matters. From 1991-2005 she was an attorney at General Mills, Inc., Minneapolis, MN where she provided advice and counseling on a broad range of legal and management issues, including Deputy General counsel supervising a 12-member legal group serving company executives and various corporate functions. She led the company’s corporate governance initiatives, Securities and Exchange Commission and New York Stock Exchange compliance, represented the company’s CEO and CFO in the SEC whistle-blower investigation, provided legal leadership in the company’s 2001 acquisition of The Pillsbury Company, and led the company-wide ethics and compliance program. From 2005-2006 she interned at Washburn Center For Children in Minneapolis, MN and provided a wide range of services in a daily therapeutic preschool classroom to 3 and 4 year olds who have experienced or are at risk for abuse or neglect. In 2006-2007 Ms. Wittenberg was a clinical intern at Hamm Clinic, St. Paul, MN and a Post Graduate Psychotherapy Fellow from 2007 – 2010. April 2010 – October 2010 she was a staff psychotherapist at Hamm Clinic, St. Paul, MN. She provided direct clinical service, diagnostic assessment, treatment planning and weekly psychotherapy to patients with a wide range of symptoms and clinical presentations. She collaborated with physicians and other staff to provide comprehensive care, evaluate treatment efficacy and participate in outcome research. Since October 2010 Ms. Wittenberg has been in a private psychotherapy and consulting practice. She provides psychotherapy to clients with a diversity of conditions and diagnoses. She consults with businesses and organizations to improve workplace functioning using psychoanalytic principles and techniques of organizational development. She speaks and writes on mental health topics of interest to legal professionals. Ms. Wittenberg has a publication in the Psychoanalytic Social Work Journal 16:31-57 (2009) "Siblings as Selfobjects: A Study of Factors and Consequences" and also a publication in the Bench & Bar of Minnesota, 111:21-24 (2011), "Are Your Clients Making You Crazy?" She has given several presentations intermingling legal and mental health, such as "Life and the Law: Handling Stress in Tough Economic Times," "Depression in the Legal Profession," "Stress Management and Resilience in a Stressful Profession." She is a member of the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society and a current license to practice law in Minnesota. Since 1997 to the present, Ms. Wittenberg has been a board member and holds leadership positions on the Council on Crime and Justice, Minneapolis, MN, and since 2008 she has been a Board member and Chair of the Nomination and Governance Committee for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, St. Paul, MN.
