Victoria Bomba Coifman, PhD

Dr. Coifman was elected to the Board of Directors in December 2009. She is a member of the Planning Committee of the Board of Directors. Presently Dr. Coifman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African American and African Studies at the University of Minnesota.  She has been on the Graduate Faculty, Department of History since 1983.  Dr. Coifman received her BA from Mundelein College (now Loyola University) of Chicago, IL in June 1959 with honors in History.   She received her MA at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1961, Department of History, and Comparative Tropical History. She received her Doctorate in 1969 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Department of History, and Comparative Tropical History. Dr. Coifman speaks French, reads Portuguese, Wolof, and Arabic. In 2008 Dr. Coifman submitted Research Proposals to the Office of International Programs Interdisciplinary International Institutional Partnership Grant with African Am and African Studies and Anthropology Depts. UMN participation and colleagues of IFAN of UCAD Senegal and U Sonfonia-Conakry Guinea and to AFRICOM with Regents Prof Emeritus Shuh and Prof T Roe, both of Applied Economics. From 2005-2007 Dr. Coifman was Faculty Advisory for SPAN Senegal and in Sept. 2004 she helped plan and participated in a visit of President and Mme Wade of Senegal for Honorary Degrees at the UMN and singing of an accord between Senegal and the University. In 2004 she was the faculty mentor/guide for Fulbright and her department of which she also write the successful proposal for the Fulbright’s Scholar in Resident Program for Dr. Thiaw, Chair of Archaeology at UCAD/IFAN Dakar and Curator, Musee d’art Africain IFAN, Dakar to teach at UMN, and Mpls. Community and Technical College. From October 2000 - March 2002 Dr. Coifman received a Fulbright Fellowship for Research in Guinean and Teaching at the Univ. of Conakry, Guinea. She is awating peace and funding to form a team and plan future research on Rio Pongo.  Dr. Coifman has done professional presentations in the U.S., Guinea, Senegal, Lille France, and Leiden Netherlands. Dr. Coifman has authored several publications. She has research and articles in progress and is peer reviewer, editor of manuscripts and grant application of colleagues.
